Departed Liard Hot Springs for the Yukon Territory under cold/overcast conditions (did I mention cold?):
Several hours later (see below), it warmed up to a rainy 45.
We made Watson Lake (our breakfast stop) with chattering teeth and numb arms (the bikes are heavy enough without numb arms). Found a GREAT breakfast stop, and power-crammed a high calorie breakfast and a gallon of coffee. The riding has been great, but this stop was magic. Watson Lake a very nice small town, the self-described gateway to the Yukon. The sign forest was a blast - we left our mark:
I did not have a proper Snuzzles sign, so improvisation yielded:
The rain, dust, and a not-to-be-forgotten farm truck (day 5 - we hope it was mud) have left the bikes a mess - rain helps, but we hope for a wash soon (the picture does not do justice to the crud)
Despite the cold (I had 4 shirts and a riding jacket on when we left Watson Lake - grip heaters, seat heaters on High), Mountains, scenery, wildlife great today - did not expect much from this ride - it was great. Upon arrival at Whitehorse - 85 and sunny. Whitehorse a great little town - could spend a day or two here sometime.
Hopefully get some SmugMug updates out tonight (maybe tomorrow - fading now). Update: SmugMug down for maintenance right now - could be tomorrow.
Tomorrow - Alaska!
Blackie out.
Guys, all this talk about not expecting it to be so cold. Cananda isn't called the Great White North for nothing! Sally and I did an adventure trip in the Canadian Rockies several years ago. Cold and Rainy every day...and the day we did White Water Rafting: Snow Showers! (It was July 4th).
ReplyDeleteBTW: So you don't worry.. while you are freezing up North, we are making sure your significant others stay warm.
