Blackie - Day 8 Reprise

First - there are rumors circulating that the reason for blog silence after day 6 relate to the fact that I could not take another night of P-Rock's snoring from the far side of the room, and in fact smothered him in his sleep. These rumors cannot be confirmed - there is, however, a BMW K1200LT available in Liard Hot Springs BC for a good price (slightly leaky ABS brake system).

OK, back to reality. P-Rock's turn for mechanical challenges - here we are engineering a saddle clamp to stop the rear brake bleeding (slowed, not stopped):

As mentioned in my previous post, we've left Gordon Lightfoot's Canada for a new reality - the Rockies we've been approaching for days are spectacular. Wish the weather would give us a break - the most spectacular parts seem to be aligned with rain showers or very dead light (for photographers). I have been collecting video when possible (weather a challenge), but I am having some technical difficulties capturing and posting - more to follow there.

It is tough not to pull off and take pictures often - the vistas are incredible.

As P-Rock mentioned, it's more than the mountains that are changing - several things to note:
1) Lack of gas (and octane) stops - very careful planning required
2) Weather not warming up nearly as fast (see Day 9 post - yow)
3) Road construction (and riding through it) getting more intense
4) Regular frost in the mornings
We ran into a fellow BMW traveler at dinner who had just come back from riding the Dalton Highway solo - he was riding a BMW GS and referred to our LT rides as Beemo-potamuses - a characterization we found both amusing and offensive. We had finished our ride for the day (in the rain), he has a couple of hundred KMs to go before nightfall - one for the hippos...

Post-ride, we availed ourselves of the nearby (walking distance from the lodge) Liard Hot Springs - very nice, very hot (~120F).

So how are we doing? - the quick answer is very good. The weather could be better, but the riding scenery is spectacular, and Alaska is within reach. The wildlife is fantastic. We did not expect the low temperatures, but are managing (Day 9 hindsight - it will get colder).
Tomorrow - the Yukon!
Blackie out.
