Blackie's Blog - Day 6

Check my SmugMug site for more pictures:
Road denizens - we were warned about the deer and moose, two more to add to the list:
Travel trailers of course, but a new one today. Some kind of small skinny rodent that darts across the road - cross between a squirrel and a groundhog - - probably could have bagged two today if I had tried.
Crossed into Alberta under cloudy skies, and little fanfare (there was a better welcome sign down the road, but I missed it (assume P-Rock did as well).
Cruised into Edmonton to solicit emergency help from the BMW dealer. As P-Rock described, it's big and it's under construction - very tough navigation. The approach:

I cannot express my appreciation for the help I received at the Edmonton BWM Motorrad dealer pictured here :

At walk-in they immediately looked at the bike (the oil leak), did a quick diagnosis, and offered to fix it right away. They believed, as we did, that it was the valve cover (the leak was still leaking, but not nearly as much - which is good as I was out of oil). When the tech got it apart, he discovered a manufacturing flaw in the valve cover itself - a small crack he believed was allowing the hot engine to mist the oil out. They do not stock that part, but he applied some high temperature epoxy to plug the leak, and put the horse back together. Total charge $0 - warranty covered it. We were back riding in about an hour, and upon arrival no oil on the bike side or my boot. Will phone ahead top Anchorage to have a valvecover replacement ready. A big thanks to the Argyll service manager and technician.
Off to dinner - Blackie out.

  1. Sounds like a prarie dog but why would they cross the road instead of going under?

  2. Yes they were indeed prairie dogs. Blackie and I discussed this at dinner. There isn't anything good to eat under a road, so they won't dig there.
